Sennheiser Momentum 2 review
Sennheiser recently updated the momentum range & released these new sennheiser momentum 2 M2AEI headphones – time to take a look & see what’s changed. There are several versions of the sennheiser momentum 2, we are looking at the larger ‘around ear’ model, as this does provide a decent element of passive noise reduction due to the fully ear enclosing ear cups.
Build quality remains stellar, the combination of stainless steel for the slider, with traditional leather stitched headband reeks quality. The earcups are now a little larger (apparently the v1 was a touch too snug for some ears) and feature beautiful soft lamb’s leather coverings on the memory foam earcups. The plastics look & feel top rate too.
The headphones now feature a folding hinge mechanism too – making storage in the provided plush case just a bit more convenient. The hinge is nice & solid, with all stainless steel construction.
The sennheiser momentum 2 is super comfortable for extended listening sessions, with a gentle clamping pressure that will satisfy the most ‘headphone sensitive’ wearer. We had no fatigue issues at all when using these for long listening sessions over several hours.
There is no active noise cancellation on the sennheiser momentum 2, but the passive noise reduction offered by the larger size earcups does a fairly decent job of reducing background noise & does offer an element of isolation that you won’t find from the smaller ‘on ear’ model. If active noise cancellation is an important feature for you, you might do well to take a look at the bluetooth version of these headphones (reviewed here – the Sennheiser Momentum Wireless).
A lot of headphones in this price range (getting into the premium end of the market) still have a V shaped sound signature (ie boosted bass / boosted treble – lacking midrange) – so it is good to report that the sennheiser momentum 2 has managed to avoid this & deliver a strong balanced sound with just a hint of a boost to the bottom end.
Midrange & treble are well delivered, leaving a sound profile that delivers fantastically clear vocals. Not quite neutral, but if you are going to tweak then this is the way we would like it done. The soundstage is clear & dynamic, with strong separation of instruments & vocals.
These are a closed back headphone, so perfect for travel as very little sound leaks out to annoy your neighbours. Traditionally the trade off to that is a less airy sound, but the sennheiser momentum 2 manages to deliver a very open soundstage with great separation…. remarkable.
If you are used to cheaper headphones (or the included buds from your phone) you are going to be blown away, the sennheiser momentum is a clear step up in sound quality. The materials & construction are also top rate, you will be very pleased indeed.
These sennheiser momentum 2 M2AEI headphones are provided in 2 versions to suit different flavors of smartphone – we have the iPhone version here but you can also get an identical Android setup, the only difference being the wire. I wouldn’t worry too much about that, as spare cables are available separately online & allow you to chop / change with no issues if you were to change out your phone to a different model.
The cable features an inline remote for volume & click to pause, and houses a small microphone for handling voice calls from your phone. This feature worked well, with our callers reporting good clear transmission with no ‘far away’ effects.

Sennheiser Momentum 2 M2AEI Review – Final Thoughts
Sennheiser has improved on the v1 design with this M2 model for 2017. Great sound quality, special build materials. We wish there was just 1 version that worked on all smartphones, but I guess that is out of Sennheiser’s control. Great headphones!
